Ride Tropical North Queensland

Starting on the reef fringed Coral Sea coast, the Reef to Reef mountain bike event quickly heads inland across a network of trails through tablelands, hinterland, farm lands, MTB parks, and tropical rainforest before finishing back at the coast four days and 190 km’s later. Each day’s stage has its own unique terrain and character to keep things interesting with a mix of fast flowing single trail, farm track, groomed downhill trails and fire trails – many through private land that can only be ridden while racing the Reef to Reef.

There’s nothing too technical but enough to get your attention including 2525m of vertical climbing. Achievable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and MTB skills.

The Reef to Reef Queensland is a sister event to the Port to Port in N.S.W. and the Cape to Cape in W.A., making up the newly formed triple crown of Australian multi-stage MTB racing.

The festival is during the ‘winter’ of Tropical North Queensland, but don’t let that fool you! The weather offers welcoming temperatures 26 °C (79 °F) for an average high and 18 °C (64 °F) for an average low with low rainfall and humidity.

Course Overview

Each day’s stage has its own unique terrain and character to keep things interesting with a mix of fast flowing single trail, farm track, groomed downhill trails and fire trails – many through private land that can only be ridden while racing the Reef to Reef.

Reef to Reef courses can only be ridden in their full format at event time. Locals heroes open up their gates and allow access to their private land for the R2R riders as the event benefits the community in so many ways. Please respect private property and make sure we are able to continue accessing these tracks by not pre-riding the course.

Stage 1: Smithfield MTB Park

Distance: 17KM

A world cup mountain bike track seems like as good a place to start as any…Located just 20 minutes drive north of Cairns Airport, Stage 1 returns to the iconic Smithfield Mountain Bike Park where you’lll tackle 17km of world class single track, steep climbs and fast, flowing descents. A slightly shorter course with a little less climbing compared to last year, this stage will give riders a chance to blow out the cobwebs while also being a nice little intro into what’s to come over the following 3 days.

All the single trailers, all the single trailers…

Stage 2 will return to the dry bush of Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park. Davies Creek is just 45min to the west of Cairns up on the Tableland. You’ll be treated to hard-packed single trail sections that wind through scrubby bushland and granite-lined gullies. We’ll throw in a couple of short, punchy climbs but your reward after 51km will be free entry into one of the best natural plunge pools around.

Every bike race has its Queen stage, and  for Reef to Reef it’s Stage 3. A tropical trek through some of the most incredible rainforest trails. With a new start line  in Mt Molloy, you’ll roll down the main street of town before heading out on to Wetherby Road towards some of the most incredible rainforests on the planet. Creek crossings, stunning views and a lung busting 70kms will have you looking for the finish line back in Mt Molloy. Yes there’s a few more k’s on the stage but we have an EPIC new trail to show off that’s going to blow your mind so it’ll be worth the grind.

Bumpety bump…

It’s all about that finish line feeling but getting to the beach at Port Douglas takes you across and down some of the coolest trails you’ll ever ride. Cattle and cane country give way to a final blast through the rainforest. Then it’s down, down, down the famous Bump Track. The last hard packed sandy stretch up Four Mile Beach will live long in your memory (and legs)… and the finish line in front of the Port Douglas Surf Club will cap off an epic four days of riding. Now it’s time to sit back, relax, grab a burger and a beer and celebrate!

Each day is different!

Comprehensive trail marking will ensure that navigation skills are not required, and with multiple check point Aid Stations included riders will be well looked after. Each day’s racing finishes at the event village with local hospitality on offer. Every stage is unique and will be super enjoyable with the final day finishing in stunning Port Douglas, the perfect place to celebrate achieving something truly epic!

In terms of where to stay, we recommend you base yourself in Cairns or Palm Cove for Days 1 and 2 and then relocate to Port Douglas for Days 3 and 4. This will enable easy transfer to the start and finish of each stage and on the last day you can then roll back to your accommodation after the celebrations!! Please contact [email protected] for all your event accommodation needs.
