Port Elizabeth is one of the major cities in South Africa and it is situated in the Eastern Cape Province. The city, often shortened to PE and nicknamed “The Windy City”, stretches for 16 kilometres (10 mi) along Algoa Bay and is one of the major seaports in South Africa. With 75 Kona slots up for grabs and rated as the 2nd Best International Race venue, it’s no surprise that up to 35% of the field each year are international athletes.

The city is a quiet beachside town compared to its more urban counterparts, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Athletes and spectators who travel here get the unique opportunity to visit one of the most wildly beautiful and historically significant areas of the world.

Tri Travel invite you come on an adventure with us and be part of our 2020 IRONMAN South Africa tour, with a choice of 5 and 7 night packages available.

Bike

The IRONMAN African Championship bike course is arguably the most spectacular on the IRONMAN world circuit. The bike course takes athletes left out of Transition and along Marine Drive towards Schoenmakerskop Village. Here you will veer right into Victoria Drive. You will find the first Bike Aid Station at the top of the incline opposite the Rover Motorcycle Club. Athletes will turn left onto Sardinia Bay Road and then a sharp right onto Heron Road, please be cautious here. A static Bike Maintenance and a SAG vehicle will be stationed on the corner of Heron and Seaview Roads. From Heron Road, athletes will turn left onto Seaview Road and continue along to Seaview Village where you will turn left onto Elizabeth Road (M9) and continue to the turnaround approximately 1.3km from De Stades Road. Bike Aid Station 2 will be situated just before the turnaround. Bike maintenance, a SAG vehicle and Penalty Tent 1 will be located at the turnaround point. From turnaround, head back over Maitlands to Elizabeth Road where you will turn right onto Seaview Road. Bike Aid Station 3 is on the corner of Seaview and Link Roads, just after the intersection. Seaview Road will take athletes towards the city through Mount Pleasant along Buffelsfontein / Heugh Road all the way down to Walmer Boulevard (M9) / Settlers Highway (M4) intersection, where you will turn right back onto Humewood / Beach Road / Marine Drive. Penalty Tent 2 will be stationed before Transition, opposite Caltex Garage. You will pass Transition / Hobie Beach to continue onto your second lap. Special Needs (accessible only on this second loop) is further along Marine Drive, opposite the 8th Avenue intersection. There is an Aid Station (second lap only) as you leave Summerstrand, opposite Admiralty Way, with another static Bike Maintenance station. IRONMAN staff, water safety officials and / or medical officials reserve the right to withdraw athletes from the course if they are judged to be incapable of finishing within time or without physical risk of serious injury or death.

Run

Run records are made to be broken on this very fast, flat run route along the beachfront. Take in the sea breeze and enjoy spectator support during the last leg of the race before crossing the finish line. The route will be closed to civilian vehicles. Athletes will run 4 x 10.55 km laps. When exiting Transition, athletes will keep left through the run out chute and turn left onto Marine Drive in the direction of Admiralty Way : keep to the left hand side of the land side lane. Aid Stations will be available at approximately 2.5 km apart (see the Aid Station page for details). The first turn-around point is up Admiralty Way at the University Junction. Here, you will turn-around and continue back on the same route, still keeping to the left-hand side of the run portion of the road. The first Aid Station will be in the bus stop opposite the old age home, you will pass this Aid Station on your way towards the turnaround. Return towards Marine Drive passing the second Aid Station located between 4th & 5th Avenue and head passed Transition to the suburb of Humewood. At the lodge road intersection, you will find your third (multi-directional) Aid Station. Turn left into Driftsands Drive and continue until the 2nd median / break in the road, the fourth and final Aid Station will be in this section of the road, you will pass it before the turnaround. Here you will turn around and head back to Marine Drive to complete a full lap. Runners will remain in the land side lane along Marine Drive : be sure to keep extreme left of this lane as there will be 2-way cycling and running on this section of the course. The Special Needs station (accessible only once during the run, heading towards Admiralty Way) is located on Marine Drive in the 8th Avenue area. Once you have completed 4 laps of the run course, you will enter the finish line chute by turning left just passed Transition and head to the Finish Line! IRONMAN staff, water safety officials and / or medical officials reserve the right to withdraw athletes from the course if they are judged to be incapable of finishing within time or without physical risk of serious injury or death.
