Taupo is situated four hours from New Zealand’s capital city of Auckland, on the North Island. It is distinguished by its lakefront setting and outdoor sports ranging from fishing to jet-boating. The vast waters of Lake Taupo, a volcanic caldera, drain into the Huka Falls, dramatic, crystal-blue cascades reachable by hiking and biking trails. Surrounding Taupo are hot springs like those filling the Craters of the Moon reserve.
1.9km swim in the clear, fresh waters of Lake Taupo. Water temperature is normally around 19 degrees Celsius (approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit). A deep water start in a wave start format out front of the Taupo Yacht Club with the first leg of 825m swim parallel to the shore followed by a second leg of 50m then returning 825m to a buoy adjacent to the Yacht Club. The final section of 200m heads back to the Taupo Yacht Club exiting up the beach. From the beach, athletes have a 400m run along the Boat Harbour to the steps leading to transition.
90km bike course starts to the cheers of spectators before heading into the rolling farmland surrounding Taupo. The course is described as undulating with enough challenging sections to create a fair race. Please note – there is a change from previous years on the return back into Taupo.
A three-lap run course that leads athletes through a picturesque 21.1km. Athletes will take in the flat lakefront scenery to the Napier-Taupo Road and return back to town.
Check In is the onsite process to officially register for the event and collect your race gear (this is in addition to your online registration).
Check In for all athletes in IRONMAN 70.3 Taupo will take place on Friday 6 December between 10am and 9pm at the Great Lake Centre, Tongariro Street.
It is compulsory for all athletes to Check In during these times.
Please consider these timings when making travel plans.
Please ensure you bring photo ID to Check In – i.e. Driver’s Licence, Passport etc.
If you do not complete the Check In process during these times you will not be able to race.
We ask that you do not bring your bike into Check In as this congests the area.
To protect the water quality of The Great Lake Taupō Region from invasive freshwater threats (such as didymo) the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board and the Department of Conservation require that you Check Clean Dry all your swimming equipment prior to entry into Lake Taupō.
A compulsory Wetsuit check is provided on the Northern Domain, Friday 6th December 10am – 9pm. Bring your wetsuit, talk to our friendly CCD staff & receive your pass to 70.3 registration. DOC advise that the system has changed and is not a compulsory dip, but still compulsory for your equipment to be checked.
Lindavia Intermedia (Lake Snow algae) is now confirmed in Lake Taupo. You must CCD your equipment before moving to any other lakes or rivers. A wash station will be provided post event or follow the instructions below.
Pre Race Training in Lake Taupo
